Shooting Enthusiasts:

You are invited to participate in the TACTICAL SHOTGUN MATCH on Sunday, MARCH 31, 2024 at the Lemon Grove Gun Club.  The Match will feature 6 stages totaling approximately 125 rounds of #7 1/2 or #8 lead birdshot only!! NO STEEL SHOT IS ALLOWED!!

This is not a beginner’s event.  Participants must be able to load their shotgun, engage multiple targets, quickly reload their shotgun, and unload their shotgun and clear any malfunctions without help and in a safe manner.  Safe gun handling is mandatory.

Match setup will take place on Saturday, DECEMBER 30th beginning at 1200. WE NEED AT LEAST SIX ABLE BODIED PEOPLE TO HELP IN THE SET UP AND STOWAGE OF OUR GEAR AND THE MORE PEOPLE WE HAVE TO SETUP THE EASIER IT IS FOR ALL OF US. SETUP IS ON SATURDAY AT NOON! WE CAN GET THE SET UP DONE FOR ALL SIX STAGES IN ABOUT 2.5 HOURS IF WE HAVE THE HELPERS TO DO IT. IF FEW PEOPLE SHOW UP TO SET UP THEN THE MATCH WILL NOT TAKE PLACE AS WE CAN’T GET IT DONE WITH JUST A FEW PEOPLE.

Please join us in the set up and, after the match, the tear down and stowing of the equipment. Brion Thomas or Paul Lichtenstein will sign off your work party card if you help with setup and tear down after all the gear is properly stowed at the conclusion of the match. If you are a Lemon Grove Gun Club member, there are three ways helping at the setup/tear down can help you:

• 1.     If you need to meet your work party requirements for the current year, your participation at both setup and tear down qualifies you for a Work Party sign-off by the Match Director.
• 2.     If you have already fulfilled your Work Party requirement, or if you are a non-member, then the Match Director can provide you with a Shoot Ticket for your efforts.
• 3.     If you only work for part of the time, the Match Director can sign the back of your Event Support card for the time that you spent.
• Match Schedule:
• Final setup for the match is on Sunday morning at 7:00AM.
• You can sign up for the match in person at the Range starting at 7:30AM. Sign-in closes at 8:15 a.m.;
• Safety Meeting starts at 8:20 a.m. and shooting starts at 8:30 a.m. 
• Shooters not signed in by 8:15 will not be permitted to participate in the match.  Please arrive on time!

TACTICAL SHOTGUN MATCH

Objectives

• ·        To provide a tactical shotgun training opportunity friendly to intermediate level shooters
• ·        To create a safe, supervised environment
• ·        To help shooters increase their safe gun-handling skills

Procedures

Stages are shot under the supervision of a Range Safety Officer.  A timer is used to record the overall time used by the shooter to address the target stage..
Penalty points in the form of additional time are added for targets missed or for procedural errors.

When

The fifth Sunday of the month (when they occur, about four times a year) with setup starting at 7:00 a.m., sign-up closing at 8:15 a.m. and the shooters safety meeting starts at 8:20 a.m.  Participants must be present for safety meeting to be eligible to shoot this match, NO EXCEPTIONS.  Shooting commences at 8:30 a.m.  Feel free to come early and help set up.

What to bring

Any shotgun of 20 or larger, a way to carry extra shotshells (bag, side saddle, wrist band, etc.) eye protection (shooting glasses), hearing protection and a desire to have some fun.  Bring at least 125 shotshells in bird shot sizes (71/2 or 8 shot).

STEEL SHOT IS NOT ALLOWED SO DON’T BRING ANY!

Four Divisions have been established: 

Open allows a maximum of 13 rounds loaded, speed loading devices, compensators, ports and optical or electronic sighting systems.

Limited/Tactical allows a maximum of 9 rounds loaded and none of the features permitted in Open.

Heavy Metal is for 12 gauge pump guns loading a maximum of 9 rounds with no features permitted in Open. 

Hunting Division which is for factory produced hunting guns (semi-auto or pump) that load a maximum of 5 rounds.

Due to the type of shooting required for this match we can’t allow the use of side by side or over/under shotguns!

Fee

Club Members shoot for $5 and guests pay a gate fee of $25.  Juniors, when shooting with a participant parent, shoot for $5 (be advised that if a Junior is shooting that person must be fully capable of safely handing their shotgun (i.e. loading, shooting, reloading, unloading) without parental assistance.  All participants are expected to help in the conduct of the event by helping with setup, tear-down, target resetting and score keeping as a non-monetary fee.

Considerations

Maximum shot size permitted is 7-1/2 shot.  This is to assure that no shot will leave the Range during the event.

Stages

A total of 6 stages will be used in the match.  The stages are designed to challenge different elements of shooting skills requiring speed, accuracy, ammunition management, and movement. All stages will require tactical reloading so managing your ammunition is a big factor in how well you do on any given stage.

These range rules are used for the safety of all participants:

• ·       The range is a COLD RANGE, which means that all shotguns are unloaded with actions open until you are shooting under the supervision of a Range Safety Officer.

Range Rules

• ·       When engaging the targets, shooters must observe the “180 Rule” which means that loaded firearms must always be pointed down range.
• ·       When moving between shooting positions, the shooter must have his/her finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard.
• ·       In moving between shooting positions, each shooter is encouraged to move only at a pace comfortable and safe for the shooter.

Other Information

• ·       Targets generally consist of reactive metal targets, clays and knock over targets made of steel.
• ·       Stages will require between five to sixteen shots, or more, with make-ups shots permitted for missed targets.
• ·       The Range Safety Officer and/or Match Director can answer any questions participants have about the rules.
